To walk the Kokoda Trail today is to acknowledge the sacrifices of the Australian Army heroes who were our fathers and grandfathers. The Kokoda Trail Challenge engenders in those who make the pilgrimage, gratitude and humility, inspiration and appreciation. The treacherous Kokoda Jungle terrain and wicked weather test us to our limits, even as we attack it in a time of peace.
"Proud volunteer and conscript, seasoned old campaigner and raw youngster.... They fought side by side in the most soul destroying conditions you can imagine"
So wrote Geoffrey Scott in his book "The Knights of Kokoda" describing the men who saved Australia from invasion by the Japanese, when they halted their advance on the infamous Kokoda Trail.
Our minds are numbed by the thought of what it would have been like with the added fear and danger of being in the midst of a jungle war. Yet to get the most value out of this journey, we need to throw aside any "rambo' complexes and take the time to "smell the roses"......... to get a glimpse of the people who inhabit the area and the lives they live - to take time to inhale and appreciate the jungle, its colours, smells an unique beauty - to stop and absorb the history and the magnificent scenery.
The Kokoda Trail campaign was an infantryman's war. Every single piece of Australian Army equipment had to be carried on the backs of men to the front line - over sometimes great distances, up soul destroying energy-sapping climbs, down savagely steep slopes and along throat-parching exposed ridges. There were no ambulances, trucks or helicopters to ease the burden. The total isolation meant severe wounds destined an almost certain agonizing death. Temperatures swung from a freezing wet cold to a stinking wet hot. Malaria, dysentery and typhus were as deadly as the enemy's bullets.
Every able bodied Australian owes it to themselves and the freedom we enjoy to make this journey. The Kokoda Trail will hold you in its grip from the moment you start to the moment you drive away from its end. It will out your strengths as well as your weaknesses: it is a mental test as much as a physical one.
If you meet its challenge you will have achieved something that can stay with you in the resume of your life, a page of which you can be forever proud.
